Welcome to the Senior Citizens Association’s website. On behalf of the Board of Directors, staff and current members of the centers, I extend a very warm welcome. The Association provides activities, programs and services to enhance the well being of older adults in Florence County. The focus is to provide access to programs to improve the quality of life for individuals 50 years of age and older. Our programming is based on the following wellness concept: intellectual, emotional, physical, spiritual, vocational, and social wellness.

There are over 25,000 senior citizens living in Florence County. The number is growing daily and we encourage seniors to take advantage of the two (2) senior centers, one in the City of Florence and the other in Lake City. The Leatherman Senior Center located in Florence is a state-of-the-art, multi-purpose, 15,000 square-foot facility, housing recreational, fitness, socialization, and educational opportunities for our community’s senior adults, age 50 and over. The Lake City Senior is 8,000 square-foot facility and shares the same objectives as the Leatherman Senior Center.

The senior centers are a partnership between the City of Lake City and Florence County but other partners played a significant role in the reality of two senior centers in Florence County. We are thankful to Senator Hugh Leatherman, Carolinas Hospital System, City of Florence, McLeod Regional Medical Center, Vantage Point, CareSouth and Office of the Lt. Governor on Aging in secure the funds and support to construct two senior centers in Florence County. It has been truly a cooperative, community-based, and grass-roots effort.

The Association depends on the members to help us plan activities and programs. Your input is important in assuring that we provide programs and services of interest to older adults.

The Association also hosts the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) and volunteering is a great way to participate in the life of the community. We operate a volunteer program and depend on volunteers 55 years and older, to give their time and talents to be service to the community in a meaningful way.

As always we owe a debt of deep gratitude to all of the caring and compassionate people who work to improve the quality of life for senior citizens in this community.

Sincerely,

Linda Mitchell Johnson
